the history of SEED

the SEED theatre project will debut as a theatre organization on November 6th, 2009 - however, SEED has a more extensive history than you may think!

In 2002, Adam Leigh launched the Way Off Broadway Theatre Company at Wright State University.  For two theatrical seasons, Way Off Broadway produced sold-out theatre with a purpose to expose audiences to cutting-edge work that was considered “rarely produced” in our area.  Almost immediately, the staff of Way Off Broadway saw how theatre and art could transform the lives of those involved (both on stage and in the audience).  This experience led Adam Leigh to a second new initiative - this time at the Dayton Playhouse.  During his time as executive director at the Dayton Playhouse, Leigh implemented a second series intended to build audiences.  The FLIP Side debuted in 2005 and utilized the same type of theatre, but also offered another perk - it was admission-free.  Again, in this experience, Leigh witnessed how theatre could penetrate the lives of those who opened their eyes and minds - and he was indeed hooked.

After leaving the Dayton Playhouse, Leigh entered Gonzaga University as a candidate for a Master’s in Organizational Leadership.  He quickly found the program to be deeply rooted in the principles of servant leadership.  After absorbing as much as he could, the idea for SEED was born - an artistic endeavour that surfaced from both worlds.

Shortly after this initial idea, Adam partnered with his wife, Michelle, and they began to design what would become the SEED theatre project.  Originally called “a seed of change”, SEED came from the desire to reinvigorate the natural desire to serve within each of us through the power of live theatre.  In addition, Adam and Michelle believe strongly in giving back and it is through that belief that SEED pledges to donate a portion of their ticket sales to other local non-profits and/or charities.

SEED stands for “societal empowerment and everyman development”.  The name came before the acronym, however it is still important to explain.  Adam and Michelle believe that the material we will present will indeed empower our society to do good work in this world.  For those that do not know, Everyman was a 15th century English morality play.  The moral of this influential piece is that in the end, a person will only have his Good Deeds to accompany him beyond the grave.  The modern day definition of “everyman” is  an ordinary person; the typical or average person.  It is our goal to inspire today’s “everyman” and help them serve, donate, volunteer, make an impact, and frankly - just live to the fullest.

The SEED theatre project is happy to call Dayton, Ohio home and cannot wait to begin work toward making a difference right here, in our home community!
