An absurdist fantasy by Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, two of the artists who brought us West Side Story and Gypsy, Anyone Can Whistle transports us to a bankrupt town in a recession-hit country. Add to that a corrupt government, an ill-fated romance between our hero and heroine, and the occasional “cookie” from the Cookie Jar, the rebellion that ensues can lead to nothing but hilarity and chaos. In the end, the show delivers a poignant message about the importance of the individual in a conformist society-but not before aiming its still-relevant barbs at politics, religion, science, race relations, greed and anything else that stands in its way!
With songs like “Everybody Says Don’t”, “With So Little To Be Sure Of”, “Anyone Can Whistle” and “There Won’t Be Trumpets”, this wacky, intelligent, highly unconventional musical satire points ahead to Stephen Sondheim's groundbreaking work in the 1970s even as it keeps a foot firmly rooted in the musical theatre's "golden age."
When Anyone Can Whistle premiered in 1964 it divided the critics, challenged the mainstream, and closed after only nine performances. However, it became an instant “cult classic” that has grown over the years as Sondheim’s reputation has soared.
